Case Study:
Strategic Planning
Our Task
We work with organizations at an inflection point. In a recent example, an non-profit organization recognized that the practice of serving those experiencing homelessness was becoming more data driven and engaged The Impact Center to develop a forward-looking strategic plan to align the new Executive Director’s vision with the Board, Senior Executive Team, staff and external stakeholders and guide its decisions, programs, and future investments.
Our Approach and Execution
We approach strategic planning in a deliberate, inclusive, and thorough manner that begins with research, interviews, and facilitated sessions with Boards and senior staff. We seek perspectives from stakeholders outside the organization. This comprehensive process drives meaningful long-term plans usually with a three-year horizon.
Our Impact
Our focus on capacity building means that we go beyond plan creation to operationalize the plan to the project level. Ideally, each initiative is further defined as a project with estimated resources, funding, dependencies, time to complete and staff owner. This allows prioritization of projects, budgeting, and completion measurement that can be linked to individual performance plans.
We work with teams and individuals as needed to increase their capability to execute projects successfully, and thereby increase and accelerate an organization’s ability to realize the goals of the strategic plan. We also identify additional staffing needs that emerge from the needs of the strategic plan.
Development of project level plans
Creation of a project prioritization scheme
Incorporation of projects into budget
Establishment of an overarching strategic plan measurement system
Incorporating project or initiative level outcomes or goals into individual performance metrics
